I finished painting Vanitas just before the coronavirus pandemic broke out and since then it has been inextricably associated with it. The painting shows a classical still life in the vanitas type, reminding us that we are mortal. I wanted to refer to the naive sense of immortality of the part of humanity that has power and that postpones indefinitely the decision to stop burning fossil fuels. Here we have objects typical of vanitas, such as a human skull, a butterfly with a flower (symbolizing fragility) and an hourglass. I juxtaposed them with objects that are worthless after the known world is gone, a balloon in the form of a rainbow unicorn was needed to relieve the tension. The whole thing is set in a desert scenery, reminiscent of the Nevada Test Site, where the first atomic bomb test was carried out. The color scheme is based on complementary colors: purple, blue, yellow and orange.
50 x 80 cm; acrylic on canvas; varnish; 2019/20
